There are literally thousands of books published every year. I know; I have to compete with a lot of them. With that being said, it's nice to know what's going to get you excited and be your next favorite page-turner. So I figured I'd help you out with that a little by sharing one of my favorite series I've been reading recently.
It's the Ranger's Apprentice Series.

Author John Flanagan created a unique world when he debuted the first Ranger's Apprentice book, Ruins of Gorlan. The main character, a 15-year-old boy named Will, is trained to become a ranger (basically a medieval Green Barret) despite his desire to become a knight.
Now honestly, the first book captured me only enough to continue with the second because I didn't feel like I was getting anything really fresh. By the end of the second though, I was very intrigued, and by the third I was in for the long-haul.
I love when you have the chance to grow up with a character, and Will's story will definitely take you all the way from childhood to later life in an emotional adventure.
The setting becomes more and more real with each book, avoiding any magic or other standard fantasy tropes. In fact for my personal enjoyment I always envisioned the series taking place in the far future after mankind has collapsed and rebuilt itself. I'm not sure that's the intention of the author, but there were enough hints throughout that I felt justified in that perspective.
One of the things that grabbed me was how the author didn't hold back in terms of violence; not in being bloody or over-the-top, but in allowing real life consequences to follow injuries and addictions. Yes, one of these books actually handles drug addiction in a depressing and straightforward way, which I appreciated.
Will's journey is one to savor, along with the amazing side characters Halt, Horace, Alice, and everyone else. You'll enjoy it, I guarantee!
